The climate materiality matrix: a tool for decarbonization
A climate-CSR materiality matrix is a tool used to identify urgent and important priorities for a company in its fight against global warming. First, students classify the company's climate-related issues—for example, reducing primary energy consumption, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, cutting down on transport, managing new digital equipment, or insulating buildings. They must adapt their organizations to a more resilient model, that consumes less energy.
"Low-carbon project managers must be clearly mandated by company leadership to orchestrate the necessary change." - CSR Director of a major luxury brand
Identifying climate priorities through visualization
Once the issues are identified, the goal is to classify the corrective actions needed to shift the company's climate and CSR trajectory. This requires a prioritization and classification phase, evaluating factors from a climate and CSR perspective: important vs. unimportant, expensive vs. inexpensive, and urgent vs. non-urgent. Once the matrix is built, the company can begin its decarbonization work, starting with the most urgent, important, and cost-effective actions, followed by those that are more resource-intensive.

Once issues have been identified by stakeholders (employees, executives, suppliers, customers), a climate and CSR materiality matrix can also take the form of a two-axis graph representing the importance of these issues to each stakeholder. This is how the fight against climate change is featured in the materiality matrices built by the Air Liquidegroup, a world leader in gases for industry and healthcare, as well as the L'Oréal Parisgroup, the world leader in beauty products, and MIPS, the Swedish world leader in bicycle helmet safety systems.
